Voted the 'Greatest car of all time' by Autocar in 1991, the Mini only just missed out on being the 'Car of the Century' in an international poll, when squeezed to second place, by the Ford Model T. Similar accolades abound, and with good reason, for the original Mini is truly a miracle of design and function. With more celebrity owners than a house in Beverly Hills, the Mini has been the choice of the rich and famous since its inception, particularly in its ultimate iteration, the Cooper S.
Offered here, is the rarer Morris version of the Cooper S. A factory left hand drive car, optioned with reclining front seats, a heater (that was an option?!) and 4.5 inch rims, it was originally delivered to Italy in January 1968. At some point in its life it found its way to California where, for many years, it formed part of a large collection near Santa Barbara.
Still equipped with its matching numbers drivetrain (as per the British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate), it is in excellent shape throughout. The body is extremely straight and rust-free and the interior very clean. Mechanically, it has just undergone a $5,000 freshening by a local specialist and consequently now runs and drives as well as (if not better than) it originally did, when it was tearing through the Roman countryside!
With only 3,642 built, genuine Morris Mini Cooper S were a rare commodity to begin with. If one factors in the number lost over time to rust and collision, the remainder must be very small indeed, particularly with their original sheetmetal and drivetrain. So don't miss this chance to own one of the best examples of one of the most highly revered cars of all time!
